you would be paying up the nose for them, plus many of the larger shrimp are filter feeders. with nippy fish its not a good idea to get them. if you are just interested in the RCS for algae control then you shouldn't even need them any ways. keep a weekly water change schedule, good filter (i would upgrade as the included filters in a kit are usually pos) and good light schedule you should have no issue with algae

Thats a shame, I really like the red colour the cherry shrimp would bring. No point buying them just to be eaten though, so I'll probably just leave them out of it then

so at the moment I'm going for 10 neon tetras and 10 black phantom tetras in a L 59cm , W 31 cm and H 48cm tank with a golden apple snail or two, does that sound ok so far?

that thread is interesting, most of the middle to lower valued suggestions i already use to feed crickets that i feed to my tarantula so i will always have some for the snails to share too :) Ill make sure the lids on tight so none escape.

Unfortunately on a quick Google search to find a store near me where I can buy apple snails I discover that in the last few months it has become illegal to import them into the UK. I'm guessing the will mean I will find it quite difficult to find them so what's the best alternative ?

well pest snails are always an option, you will most likely find them on the plants you buy. they can include but not limited to mts, ram horns, and pond snails. other alternitives (not sure if they are legal) mystery snails very colorful. or nitrite snails. the nitrites wont breed in fresh water so they wont become pests lol.

I think you mean NERITE snails rather than NITRITE snails?

Assassin snails are pretty things. Where abouts are you based in the UK? I have a load of tiny babies in my tank...if you're willing to wait for them to grow I can post some to you.

Apple snails and Mystery snails are the same thing. I would recommend Nerite snails as an alternative. You could keep a couple or three and not have to worry about them reproducing as they need brackish water to do so. Plus, they're very pretty and easier to see than Assassins. If you get Assassin snails, you also give up the notion of adding another type of snail later, should you ever get the opportunity to purchase an Apple snail, for example.
