Ooops my mistake ha. I agree with you, either one would be great but for me i think having a school of neons would provide more interest for me personally. Since you have experience with a shrimp and snail CUC can you suggest numbers and types for me please?, i looking to have at the most 8 neon in my 10g tank and want an effective crew to help keep the tank stable. I will also have some java moss with another plant but not sure which one yet.

I would say one apple snail and as many shrimp as you're prepared to have eaten by the neons when the shrimp moult. ;-) Don't count on breeding the shrimp either; my neons were little piggy gangsters as soon as the berries dropped.

ETA: I had/have plenty of java moss and caves for the shrimp but there has been a steady decline in numbers.

I don't plan on breeding the shrimp anyway and hopefully i can provide enough hiding places to limit any losses.
just managed to find a place near me that sells a 14 gallon (imperial or 17 gallon us) tank for the same price as the 10 gallon (imperial or 12us )one i was looking at earlier, this should give the neons a bit more room :)

the 17g tank would be a great starting tank for you. just look at what kind of a set up it has. on a side note about the neons and shrimp, yes they will eat the shrimp and neons are excellent hunters lol. since your looking bigger maybe there's another fish for you? what are the dimensions for this tank? i think theres some other fish you might like over the neons lol

the dimensions of this one are: L 59cm, W31cm, H48cm. it comes with an internal power filter (model 200) and a 24W PLS lamp with a free 75W heaterstat

I think those dimensions convert to something larger than 17 US gallons in volume -- more like 20-25 gallons. I would definitely increase the size of the neon school; they won't feel overcrowded! I have 26 neons in my 20 long right now; it looks great and they're super happy. I think the advice page that this website has on neons says something like 48 (!) in a 20 gallon tank.

If you did want to add a single different fish, a Honey Gourami might be nice. It was one that I was considering and everything I read said it would be fine with my neons. I opted for the second apple snail instead.

But by all means bump up the size of the neon school if you have the real estate for it.

that tank is nice XD with those measurements im seeing 23 almost 24 gallons XD... but with that you might be able to get something less nippy and a dwarf gourami with the shrimp if you wanted. i think a school of harliquin rasboras would be great in there. they are a bit less hunter than the neons and more shrimp would survive

I didn't realize i had that much with the gallons, just goes to show my converter app on my phone is rubbish haha. If i do have that much space then i will have something else than just one type of fish and ill be able to make a really nice planted aquarium for them

but then again one massive school of neons does sound quite appealing to me, decisions.........
