a single fry!!!

a few days earlier i saw a single platy fry in my tank.
this time i took action to give it a little chance of surviving.
i put it in a 2 gallon jug with a mini filter and heater. it is un -cycled.
i know that it is in a horrible enviroment but it has a way better chance of surviving in there than in my main tank.
how long till i can put it back in the main tank.
4 weeks?
i hope it survives.
my local lfs does not take fry at all.

I would think the fry might have had a better chance with better water quality and hiding then in a uncycled tank. I'm sure as it is a fry that he/she won't be able to handle the slightest of ammonia.

+1 It would have had more chance of surviving in the main tank, unless said tank is bare foot and not decorated.

What else is in the tank? While most fry are born apparently very unequipped for life, livebearers fry come out (relatively) big, well developed and fast. With some hiding spots I would think that a platy fry would have good chances of surviving with other community fish.
As for the little tank, why leave it uncycled? In the assumption that you already have a larger established tank, just give a mature sponge a squeeze in the two gallon and you will have instantly cycled it.

Ive done that before, and it worked, but be careful. Your best bet would to get some plants or put down java moss in one small area(So you dont take up alot of room) and let it survive there. They aren't very agressive toward their own kind, but it can happen.
How big is the tank that they had the baby in?

As a fry it will have a very tiny bio-load and ammonia might not be a problem if you do plenty of water changes to keep the water pristine. Some floating plants in the main tank would have been a better option, but since you chose to go this way, just keep the water very clean. You can put it back in the main tank as soon as it is big enough to not fit in the other fishes mouths.

Will do
for the last 4 batches of fry i let them try to hide in the plants and plenty of hiding places for a 20 gallon tank.
they all died within 4-6 hours.
so i was thinking of 2-3 50-60 % water changes a week?

I have no experience with fry but I'd think 3 or 4 30% water changes since stable perimeters are important.

i know it new water is way better but the water parameters are the exact same in these two tanks.
in my tap there is a .3 difference in ph, and in such a small tank that will create stress.
good idea or not a good idea.
