Calculating gallons per hour
Does anyone have a simple method of accurately figuring Gph when testing the flow rate of an overflow system and pump?

You can estimate it fairly easy, which I believe you have already done a pretty good job at.
To confirm your calculations, you can compete a water test. Put everything together, and fill the sump with as much water as it can hold, but not the tank. Have someone hold a one gallon bucket under the return pipe in the tank. Plug in the return pump and then time how long it takes to fill the gallon pale of water. You can do the math from there to verify the actual GHP
Sometimes there can be a big difference in how much GHP a return pump has as compared to what the manufacture says it has
That is why I recommended you get a slightly higher GPH pump then what you actually need along with plumbing in a bypass into the return line (just in case it does work as well as the manufacture states). If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.
