You can use pool filter sand if you want a substrate as it is inert and won't alter your water parameters. You just have to ensure you wash it thoroughly!

Just from the way it sounds, I woulld assume that coral sand would only be appropriate for salt water tanks. I don't KNOW, lol. It just sounds like it.

It is, it's crushed coral which raises the pH.

Thanks for that, and worth bearing in mind for the future, but right now im quite liking the idea of a tank with nothing on the bottom

No, some African cichlid keepers also use the stuff. It's crushed coral (I don't even dare to look into the environmental impact of that) and therefore constantly releases calcium into the water. Net effect, liquid rock!

Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.
Why pretend there are no stupid questions? Actually, There are many stupid questions: "Should I drink this bleach?" Is just one example.
Having said that, Just because it's a stupid question doesn't mean that it shouldn't be asked. It's better to know.
A warm beer is better than a cold beer. Because nothing is better than a cold beer, and a warm beer is better than nothing.
