    sorry guys I realise that you've all blown me down about using coral sand, but I was asking as ive seen others using play sand etc on here and wondered whether it may also be suitable, but have heeded what you have said about it not being and wont use it

    You can use pool filter sand if you want a substrate as it is inert and won't alter your water parameters. You just have to ensure you wash it thoroughly!

    Just from the way it sounds, I woulld assume that coral sand would only be appropriate for salt water tanks. I don't KNOW, lol. It just sounds like it.
    130g: 7 Angelfish, 1 Bolivian, 17 Neon Tetras, 14 Serpae Tetras, 9 Kuhli Loaches, 1 Otocinslus, ? Ghost Shrimp
    I've noticed that people HATE it when you point out how stupid they are, so now I try to do it politely.

    It is, it's crushed coral which raises the pH.

    Thanks for that, and worth bearing in mind for the future, but right now im quite liking the idea of a tank with nothing on the bottom

    No, some African cichlid keepers also use the stuff. It's crushed coral (I don't even dare to look into the environmental impact of that) and therefore constantly releases calcium into the water. Net effect, liquid rock!
