Do you have an ammonia spike?

No ammonia but a spike in Nitrites and Nitrates. So far I have done about a 60% water change to bring the levels down.

Well caught. At least your cycle is far enough along to convert to nitrites. It shouldn't be too long before the cycle expands enough to accommodate your new fish. Lots of regular, partial water changes will help keep them safe.

Good news... Nitrites are back to zero! Nitrates are at 5ppm. And I fixed the intake issue that was sucking stranded victims in the overflow down into the sump. Now to figure out a way to keep them from getting into the overflow to begin with.

And then there were 25... lost one this morning though I believe it was due to an injury and stress. I have one more that has a small injury to its tail that I am keeping my eye on.

    Hey Mike,

I just sat down and took the last hour to read this journal from the beginning. What an adventure! I can't even believe what you made of that tank. It's so beautiful!

I am going to ask a couple of questions because I'm completely ignorant when it comes to sumps. What are the advantages of putting all that work into a sump and overflow vs just hooking up a regular top of the line canister filter?
What are the advantages of a coast to coast sump vs other sump designs?

    You've got me really intrigued...maybe I'll build a sump for my 90 in a year or 2.

    Hi crunchy, thanks for reading!

The advantages to the bean animal coast to coast overflow are the massive surface skimming ability as well as the overall volume that can be handled buy the system. It is also dead silent. Would I say that it is better than that of a canister filter? I do not know yet. I run a canister on my 55 along with an ac70 and that performs flawlessly. From what I've read you will see a 50/50 response when it comes to sumps in a freshwater tank. You do get the benefit of the additional water volume and massive amounts of bio filtration.

For me though there is something about a challenge I enjoy. I thoroughly enjoy the research, design and build process (kind of explains why I was a carpenter for 18+ years). I was looking for my second tank knowing that I wanted to do something different... I knew I wanted to do a sump but what? Thats when I found the 72g. the previous owner had drilled it for a coast to coast overflow. I immediately was intrigued and googled the term that lead me to the bean animal site for the design.

I read through all of the information and thought... "Ok this sounds like something I would like to build" it's different and not everyone does it. For me that was the thing that drew me to it. If you are like me and truly enjoy getting your hands dirty to make something work I highly recommend it. It has been a very rewarding project.

Hopefully I was able to provide an answer to your questions, feel free to ask away if you have more.

    Mike
