Have you considered an automatic water changer?

A changer or top off?
Update:
The tank is full! No Leaks! The over flow is functioning as designed. Videos will be online tonight.
I have tested power outages and restarts. Functioning perfectly! Anti-siphon on the return is functioning perfectly. Lots of flow! I suspect I could have gotten by with a Mag 12 pump but the Mag 18 is working just fine.
Observations:
It would have been nice if the c to c glass was tinted instead of clear but that was cost prohibitive. I can raise the operating WL in the sump about another inch.
It's quiet! I can only hear the hum of the Mag 18 and I suspect that will quiet down once I move it against the wall and finish the plumbing surround.Mike

Few ideas... what about painting the overflow glass...? say paint it black?
And if you wanna check for any dead spots try a few drops of food coloring55g: DG, 5 GBR, 10 Zebra Danio, 6 Cherry Barb, 5 Oto, 6 Sterbai, 9 Platies, RCS

And to add. I am very impressed by the set up. Quiet. And I could sell that idea to my gf lol
I just thought of one possible problem you may run into....
With the heater in the sump, won't the filtered water just stay at the top and go right back over the over flow, I think it would cause the tank temp you be lower than the sump temp (just something to make sure you test) I think aiming the output downwards in the tank would fix it thoughLast edited by Hardy85; 03-05-2013 at 08:22 PM.

Ah... food coloring.. I wondered if I could do something like that but was worried about staining something. As far as painting the glass on the inside of the tank I am a bit leery of doing that. I will look at it again once the back glass is painted.
LOL... well there you go. Incentive to start the new project!

incentive to buy a new house first ;)
I would love to do this exact same thing... but on a 175 bow front... (or a 155) just for the 6' length. Probably use a 55 or something for a sump though lol
Watch the temp in the tank vs temp in the sump... see above editted post55g: DG, 5 GBR, 10 Zebra Danio, 6 Cherry Barb, 5 Oto, 6 Sterbai, 9 Platies, RCS

I also wondered about the heat. I suppose It would follow the flow of the water though. My 55g has an inline heater and it dumps in at the surface. The temp maintains pretty well in there but it is definitely something to test.
