  1. Default Rummy Nose- opinions please

I have a 30 gal tank right with 6 each of Jumbo Neons and Black Neons... I thought I had more of each but I must have lost a few so I plan on bringing those numbers back to at least 8 each. Right now I still have 3 glofish left that bug me and I doubt the 2 will live much longer as they are showing age.
It is a well planted tank now and an AC 200 filter so lots of filter capacity. I don't mess with ph but all tetras seem happy and healthy. I am looking to add something in replacment of glofish that is NOT aggressive like them, but has color that will show more in a very green tank. Now right now I'm pregnant so it's difficult to do WC as often as I should and from I am reading Rummynose would not fare well in that. So I think I'm looking more into the future.
Do you thin that I could pull this off? My neons have done well when introduced and I rarely lose a fish. Mostly I've lost small neons when first introduced and a black neon here and there... obviously more of a died of old age thing. I'm just wondering if I have enough 'experience' to own rummy nose. lol I have had snails and they didn't do well becuase I couldn't keep enough calcium for them. Even though I think we have harder water here- it seems my other tetras have adapted. Only stores I can trust here are Petsmart because I always lose fish from Petco or Walmart. Those are only options as I can't afford shipping - I will have 3 kids as of June and a husband who wants more color in my tank... he thinks blacks neons blend too much and he doesn't like them. Oh well. I do. But I agree I'd like a little more action in my tank and more contrasting color as well as a tighter schooling fish. I've considered adding Harl. Rasboras too but they might look too much like B. tetras. Anyway what do you think?

I also have 4 peppered corys.

As long as you slow acclimate Rummey noses they should be fine. The trick is keeping the nitrates as low as possible by doing weekly water changes of 25-50%. They along with Cardinals are very sensative to poor water quality.

Black Neons and Harleys are not as sensative if you consider yourself a novice and want to keep something easier.

I've never kept rummynose. In my 30 gallon i have right now, My black neons are pretty boring, don't really school, just drift around in my 30 gal. But my harlequins love to chase each other around, and with their color they make a wonderful contrast to my black neons. You could also try glowlight tetras too if you decide against Harly's. But I would recommend them.

I like Harlys and Glolights, have had them before.
I am still looking for something that has different color though. I still may add harlys as well as up my current schools (I think I'm missing 2 blacks and 2 neons). My background is green and black, plus lots of live plants and driftwood make it hard to see anything black or see through. Sitting here I can see a stripe from the black neons and my glofish. I rarely see my neons unless I clean the tank... then they calm down and hide together again. I've done well with Jumbo neons, so I guess it's time to get gutsy and try my hand at the next fussy level. I've owned fish for yrs but you know.. the basics. Bettas, Guppies, Mollies... yah. As long as I mae myself commit to wc I should be ok then. I've had to back off a bit because I can't lift much weight so I usually try to wait for husband's help. That doesn't happen often so I'm learning to do smaller buckets . Now I just want to get some. Wonder if Petsmart has any on sale. lol

I think if you lose a black neon here and there before they reach old age, which is 5 years at the very, very least, there's still something you have not yet mastered.

With your current stocking 6 rummynose is an option. Personally I think I'd just add neons (I'm assuming a jumbo neon is a variety of the common neon tetra) and black neons. To me 2 schools over bare minimum looks better than 3 scattered schools.

I found the 5th black tetra I knew he was in there... just hiding. Actually I forgot that the reason I had lost a couple of neons and the one black one (which of course we have no idea how old they are when you get them) was an outbreak of Ick when I bought the Neons. Losing only 2-3 fish is not bad considering at the time my tank was over loaded with guppies/mollies/platies. My mom had bought the neons for me as a suprise so yeah.. couldn't turn them down. Orginally I had rescued a black neon (a $1 one) left all along in a tank with NOTHING in it. I couldn't handle seeing him all alone and I had 6 jumbo neons (yes they are a large form of neons) so he fit in with them till they had restocked and I could get more blacks to go with him. I like having larger schools and I figure I can get away with at least 8 if not 10 per school. But again I'm looking to add something a little brighter and more active to the tank so I can see them since my neons are hard to see.

I hear that RummyNose's tend to come with Ick. Have any of you dealt with this? I don't have a quarenteen tank yet... well, Idon't have a filter for one.
