My tank only grows glass algae when my bulbs get old - when did you last change your bulbs?

I changed the bulbs about 2 weeks ago, so they're pretty fresh. I seem to have conquered the problem, but we'll see. I tested the phosphates in my tap water with the kit, and it was off the chart. I don't know what the levels are, since we have a well, not "town water." Anyway, during my last water change, I replaced about 6 gallons of the water with spring water (which tested the same as the control sample in the phosphate kit). I also removed the carbon from my HOB filter--I had noticed that the worst of the algae was where the water current hits the front of the tank. I read up on it and found out that carbon produces phosphates as well, and that most people aren't even using activated carbon unless they are removing medication from the tank. It's been two weeks since I removed the carbon and used the spring water, algae yet. Fingers crossed. I'm not using spring water for every water change, but I'm going to monitor it and use it whenever I need to bring down some of the levels. Thanks again, everyone, for all of your advice. I'm going to mark this "case closed" for now!
