Boost your neons. They'll look great.

I wouldn't put cherry barbs in a 20G. I have a very large school in a 30G and wouldn't now like to see them in smaller groups or a smaller tank. They can get quite bulky. Some of my larger males are nearing 2 inches.

The cardinal tetras I've seen have more red on them than neons. I think they're a prettier fish. A small school would look very nice in your tank.

no to the kribs.
no to any dwarf cichlids
no to any cichlids in general
your current stock allows for increasing those numbers. neons get stressed by bigger fish. as you've seen with your gourami.
other big fish will create that same exact environment

the only thing to do is boost your neons and keep the tank healthy.

You might want to consider rehoming your Neons.

You seem to be intent on changing the themeing of your tank, and the Neons do not seem to fit in the new plan.

If I am reading you wrong, I mean no offense, but the others are correct. No to everything else... you need to increase your Neon school size. Six is a school for some species, but Neons want more...

I have my Neons with a Betta and some big BA tetra, but my tank is a little larger, it has a LOT of cover and hiding places, and it took a good deal of effort to find the right fish with the right temperament to live together.

Agreed with the above, for the most part. If you added a cichlid of any kind, you'd be changing the dichotomy of the tank. Right now, sub-Gourami, you have a peaceful tank. If you want a peaceful tank, I'd take back the Gourami (even though I've had great experiences with them), keep the rest of the stock you have, increase the neon school (or change to cardinals) and increase the Oto school.

You could add a Betta and have success... or you could end up with another bully that'll terrorize your tank, because they, like Gouramis, are extremely territorial (though temperaments do differ across the species).

If you wanted something a little less peaceful, you could certainly remove your stock and add a pair/harem of GBRs or Bolivians. Then maybe a few of Killifish. I think you'll be happy with a large school of Neons or Cardinals, though. Spectacular visual.
