Stocking ideas for 50 000 gallon ponds
I am currently digging / setting up two 50 000 gallon ponds and i am looking for stocking ideas
They will most likely contain saltwater since I have better access to saltwater on the property but one of the could be setup for freshwater.
I am planning to keep tilapia in one of them. We have a invasive strain here that do very well in saltwater and can be found in costal waters,
I am looking for ideas about what to keep in the other. Preferabel ideas that work with saltwater as that will be cheaper to maintain but I am interested in freshwater as well. Whatever i stick they need to do well with limited filtration/water movement since the ponds will have standing water with about 10% replaced on a dialy basis.
One idea I have been playing have been pacu and arapaima but i would like to hear what other ideas you guys might have

I would have to import them myself. But that is true with most things unless they are native to the area.
Trpical gar is available hereDo as I say. Not as I do.

I am surprised that this question comes from someone with close to unlimited possibilities. It definitely has made me curious though to which country you live in.

I live on the pacific coast of Nicaragua.
You think being "someone with close to unlimited possibilities" as you put it make it easier to decide what to keep. It makes it that much harder. If I had a limited amount of choices it would be easier.
BTW if someone wonder why I am building two 50 000 gallon ponds without any specific plans for them I ca say that it is because I need the dirt as filler. I could either pay USD 3-4k to have the dirt trucked to the lot or I could pay a fraction of that and get two ponds to play with. it seemed like an easy choice;-)Last edited by William; 02-07-2013 at 10:43 PM.

That depends on what I do with them. If I do freshwater I will need to encase them to prevent salt from leaking from the clay. If I on the other hand use saltwater I am better of not encasing since the bare dirt keep the water temperature cooler than it would be in an encased pond.

Hmmm that strange, DO they work if you go directly to where they are hosted?
