From what I've read they do have the same "family behavior". Will have to do more research on the hex... generally I've read that "floor space" is important with rift lake fish...

When Fairys are concerned, floor space is not as essential. They make homes in elevated holes like if you put in barnical shells stacked they will do fine all the way up to the top. These arent like dealing with Haps.

So you could see it working long-term with the right rockscape? I'm thinking a stack in the middle all the way to the top, lots of caves and holes...

That could work. You do need some swimming space so I was imagining a stack up along the back. Should work though - the volume is enough.

Lots of stuff to think about. Might end up trying it... Gotta get the tank out here first though...

    Time to re-think things?

It has come to my attention that the 20 long isn't ideal for the brichardi long-term. (Lots of conflicting info out there...) I don't see the 45 hex as being any better, maybe I'm wrong?

Since my wife has become attached to the brichardi I will probably keep them. This means I need to upgrade. 40 breeder (36x18x16)? 55 (48x12x21)?

Can you give the floorspace dimensions of each of the tanks?

A pair of brichardi is ok in a 20 until they start rearing young - which is almost inevitable in a species only tank like this (the best option for them and it's a credit to you that you're doing it). You'll have to re-home the young once they grow on a bit (in my opinion) as they do get pretty large when mature (4-5" isn't unheard of) and they can have batches of fry numbering 50-100.

Is it worth setting up the other tank as a grow on tank? You could sell the youngsters at a tidy profit.

    OK, here's the floor space:

    20L 30"x12" (76x30cm)

    40B 36"x18" (91x45cm)

    55 48"x12" (121x30cm)

I like the 45 hex for a display tank, I think it would be fun to scape. It's too interesting of a tank to be a fry/QT in my opinion. When I upgrade the 20L will become a fry/QT tank.

Thanks again for all your help!!!!!

Oh hang on - does the hex have a bigger floor space than the 20 then? If that's the case I'd be sorely tempted to do some sort of cool rockwork stack up the back wall, with lots of caves, and move your brichardis into that tank. Then you can be confident that the resultant fry will easily slot into the family unit and help rear future broods of fry.

Just did the math... the 45 has 54 more sq. in. (350 sq. cm.) more floor space than the 20 long...
