Returned the stock and grabbed a larger HOB for cheap (used, but looks brand new...) and filled it with ceramic rings. Took down the tank, cleaned it, and set it up with the new sand. Filters are running (new HOB with media from old HOB stuffed in, and sponge filter that was in the tank before).

I will add the fish when I am sure the cycle is stable. Hopefully I can save some of the bacteria...

    Pictures tomorrow...

Not much to look at, but here's a full tank shot anyway...

Smart looking tank there! How deep is your sand?

Sand is about 1.5" deep. The stand has "trim" that covers the bottom frame of the tank, so the sand is deeper than it looks... I bought two bags but only put one in so I can add the other one if you think the shellies would like deeper sand...

Ahhhh right, no - it just looks shallow. 1.5" is perfect. They'll push it around and create mounds and craters in it.

Added ammonia today when I got home from work. Tested a few minutes ago just out of curiosity... ammonia dropped slightly and I think I might be starting to see a hint of nitrAtes. At first glance it appears I may have been successful in saving the bacteria! We will see what the levels are in the morning...

That's great. What level are you bringing the ammonia up to?

I have dosed the tank once. That was yesterday after work. Was between 2-4 ppm, closer to 4. I thought I saw a hint of red in the nitrate test late last night, but I think I was mistaken because the levels were the same this morning. So the waiting game begins. That's ok though because I am not in a rush...

Picked up some "cichlid stones" today because I just like the way they look. Problem is I am having trouble deciding how to arrange them... would appreciate opinions from those more experienced in "aquatic art".

    Here's a pic:
