Just set up a hospital tank

My Betta has fin rot so today I bought a 28L tank + heater and filter and transferred him to it.

Now, ive put some of my sand substrate from my main tank in a old pair of tights and put it at the bottom of the tank + ive taken a piece of the filter media from my canister filter and put it in the new one, is this going to be enough to keep the ammonia + nitrite at bay? Or will the tank still need to cycle?

Btw ive put a pair of tights over the filter output to reduce the flow as it was blowing the betta around, is this ok?

I think the sand is probably unnecessary but you've done good work already in isolating the sick fish.

You should be ok with the filter media from your canister in your new filter. The key to finding out if it's working is to test your water. Do you have liquid test kits to check for ammonia/nitrite/nitrate? If not - get some (API/Tetra make good ones).

Are you treating the fin rot with meds?

Well I know some people advise putting used gravel in new tanks so figured it wouldnt hurt to do the same with my sand.

I cut a piece off one of my filter pads and I also put in some white media balls. I do have test kits for ammonia/nitrite/nitrate, so i'll test later.

Im using the 'King British fin rot/fungus control' med.

Ok, sounds good. Let us know how you get on with the tests. Hopefully you're culture will have transferred fine and ammo/trite spikes won't be a problem.
