I wouldn't...after all, the second one in line may never come on, because it will be receiving heated water from the first one...one should be enough

Well, my issue is that the biggest one they have on Foster and Smith is only rated for 80 gallons max. I mean I could leave an external heater in, but my goal is to really get all that crap out of there.

If you just want to have the second heater as a backup, set a degree or two lower than the main unit, I don't see why not. I wouldn't string them in sequence tho, I think I would put one on the intake and one on the output. It would also affect your flow a bit.

Personally, I would just run the one.

You can't put one on the input as they must be installed in one direction only (flow goes from the bottom of the heater to the top). You would need 2 canisters with 2 inlines. For the Rena canisters you need the 5/8" inlet/outlet on the heater, for Eheims I think they're 1/2".

Just as a point of reference, I have a single 300 watt hydor inline heater on my 120 gallon sumped set-up, which has a total of ~140 gallons. That single heater seams to work well for me. The room the tank is in never gets below ~74F and the tank stays at a stable 78.9 to 79.2 F

You could try one 300 watt in line heater and see how things go first

Just make sure to carefully follow the installation instructions as already mentioned
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

Will do Cliff. The only thing about that for me is that we like it COLD. Lol. If my thermostat hits 70 we're hot in here. I'm gonna hook it up and leave my Fluval external heater in there to see how it does.

SO! I ordered the Eheim 2217-37 with the 300watt Hydor inline heater. It should be here in about a week hopefully.

Now I have a question -- when I install the canister filter can I just shove all the media I have in my other filters in it and immediately remove the HOBs, or should I put the canister on for a day or two first and then remove the Hobs?

I would run them all for about 5 weeks. This should allow the canister filter to become fully seeded with enough BB to handle it. I have done this a few times now, worked well for me each time. Just keep a very close eye on the parameters, just in case

As another option, could you just move the media from the old filters and place them in the new one ?
