I'm gald the pain is tolerable.

Hey guys! It's been a while but I have a few things that have prompted my return.

The most exciting is that my angelfish have finally paired off and have spawned for the first time!!! Two of my goldens have been protecting one side of the tank pretty heavily lately and I've been watching for eggs. Today I finally saw them! Lol. Unfortunately the laid them on the intake tube of one of the filters, buuuut I'm not set up to keep the babies anyway so I guess it doesn't matter that much.

Another thing is that a friend of mine is having issues with her gold fish. Something about developing black streaks on his fins. ANy ideas?

    congrats on the angelfish pairing.

We would probably need pics of your friends goldfish to do much. Also tank parameters, size, filtration, etc.
    Current tanks:

    Hello and welcome back!!

Black patches are a sign of ammonia burn, so info on her water parameters would be helpful.

She sent pics but they are horrid. I can't tell a thing. Uhg -- the tank situation is horrid. Not permanent mind you. She brought him in out of the pond for winter. BUT it's a 10g with a broken filter. I'm trying to explain it to her right now buuuut she's like, "But people keep them in bowls." Lol.

oh lordy. what size is that fish? Many gold fish are fine in ponds for the winter if you make sure you keep a small hole in the ice if it does freeze over to help keep it oxygenated. Just don't feed them in the winter as their metabolism slows to a halt similar to Koi.

That is the same argument I try telling our youngest kids day care provider who has a 3 1/2 fancy goldfish in a 3 gallon bow tank. she kept trying to put other small fish in there as well but the gold fish kept eating them and I tell her it needs a way bigger tank, like 10x the size it is in now.

He looks to be about 2 inches max to me. I told her she needs to be doing W/C's everyday to keep the ammonia down. He's not eating for some reason.

Hey Mandy! How are things going at home?

Congrats on the angels pairing off. That's exciting news. =] And of course, sorry for your friend's goldfish having problems. If she has a pond, I wonder how deep it is. How deep it is will depend on if the goldfish can actually stay in there during the winter. I'm pretty sure it has to be about 4-5ft deep to protect them from the ice over. If it is, she probably would have been better off leaving it out there. =/

Sounds like it's probably not eating, because it's stressed out from the ammonia burn. I imagine it's still being effected by it, so it's just living in filth at the moment. Until the stressors are gone, it probably won't act normally (ie - eat).

And selling this doesn't help people to know how to properly keep a goldfish -

Saw this last week at Petsmart. 6.7 liters/1.77 gal for a goldfish - specifically for a goldfish! Unbelievable.
