Finally fired up sump

Today I finally have my home made sump ready for a test run. I opened the valves from the over flow and after somewhat filling up the sump, I added more saltwater and fired up the return pump. It actually works!

Got brave and pulled the return pump plug to simulate a power failure. Found out I have the return out-let too low in the main tank. The syphon effect quickly filled the sump.

Went to a few stores looking for a 3/4" check valve. Came back with plan B. No check valve to be found so I have to raise my out-let which is tough with the current plumbing. I picked up a few things but I need to add a 90 degree fitting so the tension is off the out-let nozzle. Then I can use a heater type suction cup device to keep the out-let nozzle where I want it.

I also started up my protein skimmer. I have the bubbles set on low as it takes 24 hours to break it in. Man does this thing bubble even on the lowest setting.

Things are coming together. And thankfully my live sand has calmed down and I can see the back of the tank again.

You could some line-lock to raise it without changing the pumbing.

You can always just drill a small anit-siphon hole into the outlet so that once the water falls below that point it'll pull in air instead of water breaking the siphon.

I think I will try the drilled hole in the top of the out-let. I just want to have another out-let tube in case the tank water come through my drilled hole.

Cliff, I'm not sure what you mean by, " You could some line-lock to raise it without changing the pumbing.".

I mean that line lock works with fittings meant to be used on almost all PVC lines or bulkhead flanges on the market today. You just add it to your return line and then use the line lock to set the hight of the line and direct the flow were you want it.

If you look at the top left hand corner of the below pic, you will see how I used line-lock to raise and adjust the direction of the flow. Although youe set-up is not drilled, this still might help in your current situtaion

Thanks Cliff I get it now. I'll have to get a different out-flow attachment but that concept looks like it will work 100%.

Good idea Cliff! I use those and never thought of setting it up like that!

The drilled hole does work. Just make sure its pointing into the tank.... trust me I learned the hard way once!
