I have the same situation. I have 2 five gallon tanks, one is 3 weeks old with 3 white cloud mountain minnows, aerator, filter. Water parameters: ammonia/nitrites/nitrates= 0 Temp: 72-74 Testing every 1-2 days. Fish are active and eat well. I used Tetra SafeStart before adding fish.
The 2nd tank houses 1 male betta with a filter and heater. He had an aerator in the first tank but seems to be happer in the bigger tank without one, frequently makes bubble nests. I might put in a very small airstone just to increase the oxygen transfer. I moved him from a 2 gallon tank with an under gravel filter, so I moved all the gravel and ornaments into the new tank and added SafeStart. Water parameters: ammonia/nitrites/nitrates= 0 (1-2 times I think there was a hint of slightly less than bright yellow, but not enough to be. 25). Temp: 80. Also testing every 1-2 days. Betta very active/interactive and eats well.
Fake plants in both, so obviously no affect on nitrates...will continue to tes and occasionally add more SafeStart.
Will also continue with 25%/week water changes as well.Last edited by Betta113; 01-31-2013 at 01:07 AM.
