Black Ruby Barb
The Black ruby barb, Pethia nigrofasciata is another alternative to the Tiger barb.
Generally very peaceful making it an ideal resident of a community aquarium. Very hardy, it places no special demands in terms of water chemistry it can be combined with other small cyprinids as well as tetras, livebearers, rainbowfish, anabantoids, catfishes, and loaches.
Stays fairly small 2" and usually availble
It’s a schooling species by nature, and at least 6-10 specimens should be purchased. Maintaining it in such numbers will not only make the fish less skittish but result in a more effective, natural looking display, and males will develop better colours in the presence of their rivals.
The male during spawning season is a very attractive fish.Last edited by steeler1; 01-14-2013 at 07:34 PM.

I agree it's a good looking fish.. Is there a question?
Yes, And . . . ?

I think he's just introducing uncommon and interesting fish he has come across. I don't think he has any questions...

Possibly...
If that's the intent it would be more effective to write up a full run down and submit it as a profile, We could always use some more of those.

I found a good video to show how intense the males coloring gets during spawning: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=VN-CYbw1-u4

Do you happen to know of a place that carries these?
I may be upgrading to a 30gal tank, and I'd love to add 3 of these to my current barb school.

They are usually available online [& Petco sometimes has them], Is your stock still the 6 tigers and two corys?
I ask because [Provided you have adequate filtration] you would have room to up both those numbers and add at least 6 or 8 rubys which would be a much more appropriate start for stocking these. Three isn't enough.

These are interesting but you need to site the sources you are copying the information from. The forum can get in trouble with copyrights. I also agree with 850, some care info would be much more helpful to anyone who may be interested in keeping them.

Yes, thats still all I have. I'm new to this so please pardon my ignorance. But I was under the understanding that barbs in general school well. So, as long as the overall school is 6+ you are good. So, 3 green, 3 tiger, 3 black ruby = 9fish school.
Please correct me if I'm wrong. Though, the 6 barbs I currently have all get a long great.
