108 watts on 29gallon?

108 watt of T5HO's is what I have on my 55 gallon, lights on only 6 hours a day, heavily planted and I have a problem with green spot algae.

Prior to this light, I had 130 watt of compact lighting and never had an algae problem with lights on even more hours.

The T5HO's are high output and I can't imagine 108 watts on 29 gallons.

gotcha. So I removed one of the 54 watt bulbs so now I'm down to one 54 watt 6,700k bulb. I tried to black it out for a day, but failed. I read you should add some CO2 so I dosed with a CO2 liquid supplement and added about another half dozen plants (frill and red ludwigia)

Water is still green as of today when I dosed and added new plants. I will be checking it daily and responding on progress. Does anyone else have any suggestions?

The blackout has to be for a few days at least or all you will achieve is stronger algae and weaker plants.

If the water is green, do a near 100% water change and try the blackout for three days (no light at all, including room lights or indirect light so the tank has to be covered well.) A thin sheet will not do it - any small amount of light will keep the algae going.

Remember, alage will also grow well if the plants are missing any critical nutrients or if the nitrates are too high with the extra light.

First priority is to get rid of green water.

You have options:

1. Run 2 6500 k tubes with co2 injection and all the complications that come with that.

2. Run 1 6500 k tube and find an insert for the second tube spot to protect the slot from moisture damage.

3. Go to a low light (1-2 watts per gallon of T5NO) and low light plants (Low Light, Low Tech)

4. Consider other options that I haven't thought about, but maybe somebody else will.

Checking it daily is not a blackout [As mentioned] I would suggest that you could try following the suggestions offered.

You would have to actually do it before being concerned about what comes after.. So far that has not been an issue.

How about you try it and see and we will tell you what comes after on the fourth day of the blackout.. [EDIT: The obvious answer of - Not repeating what got you this green water is a start but Taurus ruined that already ]
