I have no experience with Harleys (or with how large they eventually get) - large bodied tetras wouldn't do very well in a 10gal because of the # you need to keep them active & happy - too few and they tend to stay in one spot and not roam the tank. Serpaes also need to be kept in a larger group.
Perhaps you should wait until you upgrade to a larger tank - then you have many more options for stocking - maybe stick with what you have for now. The only tetras that would work in a tank that size are neons & glowlights but you don't care for them.46 gal fw tank with black skirt tetras, neon tetras, spotted cory catfish, cherry barbs, guppies, snails & 4 amano shrimp - plastic & live plants

It seems harleys would do well. When browsing the internet the tend to seem to do well in a 10 gallon. I'm going to keep looking. If they really won't work them i'm going to go with glowlights or emperors. I've had glowlights them before. They're one of the few more streamlined tetras that I actually enjoy, them and Emperors XD

Glowlights would be your better choice than Emperor's because the emperor gets to 2". One of my favorite tetras but need a biger tank.

We'll see what happens. I'm debating getting a 15 or 20 gallon and just upgrading the tank.. However I'd need something that was close to 20" in length so the extra gallons would have to be made up for in width or height. And I just haven't found a tank like that yet.

I'm sure you know this, but what's usually recommended is to get the largest tank you can afford (and have space for) - easier to maintain good water parameters and you don't have to keep upgrading to get the fish you want : )

+ 1 to Andrea, depending on your budget of course, always get the biggest tank you can. I've had all the 5 to 20 gallon tanks and except for a 15 gal for QT I will never own anything that small again for all the reasons she pointed out.

Well in response to everyone's input I went ahead and bought a 20 gallon high from Petco today. I wasn't going to originally but they were having their dollar per gallon sale so I bought one. Was originally going to get a new API master test kit but this store had the same issues the other did. Then I wanted to get a group of Cherry Barbs and before I did some prick came over and bought all 12 males!! So all that was left was a group of 30 females and I didn't want an all female group. The man was a moron. He bought 12 male cherry barbs and 2 of several different kind of schooling tetra. I really hope he's adding these fish to his existing schools.
Anyways I bought my 20 gallon and also got a nice, inch long female crowntail betta. I wanted to get a male king betta but I knew it wouldn't work in my tank. I got the healthiest, nicest looking female they had. Currently acclimating her :D
