  1. Lightbulb need ideas on something to buy (have a giftcard)

Long story short-and i'll probably make a wall of text. so i apologize in advance. lol

    quick backstory:
have to tear down my tank for a few days due to house construction in the next month.
so i've given up on my plants
the lights/nutrients etc balance wasn't working, algae was growing and it was an uphill battle that was deemed useless as I have to tear it down in a few weeks. (so keep this in mind for suggestions)

    SO.
I have a splendid GF, and she got me a nice random surprise of a giftcard to the nice LFS in the area (not a big box store).
They are not as diverse as a petco, but they have a cooler selection of cichlids, random other fish from time to time. (more known for the SW)
(they have a georgous Jack dempsey that is about 8inches long for 20bucks...someone returned him as they didnt realize he would shred through his community set up.lol)

I don't know what to spend this giftcard on...
    they don't have light fixtures
i'm set on filtration and stocking (see below/comment on it)

any ideas on stuff that'll be good to buy? or just neat stuff you own/recommend? I can take the ideas and go back to the store and compare.

current set up: 40b (45gallons), pretty heavily planted, 1 piece of driftwood, 2 others available-just dont know how to set it up naturally
    13-15 silver tip tetra
    8 bloodfin tetras
    2 bolivian rams
    1 rupperlip pleco
    2 male swordtails
    9 spotted cory's

You left out one relevant detail... Our budget is...?
    Gas mileage isn't everything OIIIIIIIO
Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.
Why pretend there are no stupid questions? Actually, There are many stupid questions: "Should I drink this bleach?" Is just one example.
Having said that, Just because it's a stupid question doesn't mean that it shouldn't be asked. It's better to know.

    She is a keeper!

Always nice to have the significant other support you in your hobbies!

Budget is eh-anything really (minus getting a new tank. lol)
for #'s sake lets say 100/150ish (USD-as i know some members are spread across mother earth!) is my top limit for the time being.

I am not quite sure what you are looking for considering a new tank is out and:
    they don't have light fixtures
i'm set on filtration and stocking
... - Do they carry books? A lifetime supply of Safe?

Ya, we made a promise/pact that in a few years when we get settled, and our own place that i'll convert the 40b into either a sump/sell BUT
    i've got the go ahead for a 6ft long tank...so 125-180gallons? lol

so in the next few years-i'll be getting a new one.

I made her put that in writing and sign it

no books/safe. They really specialize in SW. as their store is 70/30 SW to FW.

they did just bring in a shipment of shrimp (they weren't labeled yet...but assuming ghost shrimp) other than that is was discus, kribs, wide/nice variety for a african set up, gsp's, variety of rams, angels, and then more aggressive cichlids-JD's, GT's and more. I can't remember them all. ha

im at a loss too :/

Well.... you did mention you want to rebuild... you could save it to invest in new plants/ferts/substrate for the rebuild.

If your tank is already well stocked, and you got all the fixtures, can always save the gift card and use it on fish food when you run out.

Or save them for meds if your fish get ill or buy a few back up heaters and filters. Those are all things that stink when they die. If its a lfs i sure they can order u a light fixture. The one i used to frequent would order anything i was willing to pay for. They even had some one order a rare arrow that ended at like 900$ or something.... So maybe they will order u something?

Or keep them till mts strikes....
KING OF THE GOLD BARBS RAWR!!!!

I agree. Get some dechlorinator, food or meds so you have a supply on hand.
