It is hardwood, however I always use Malasian driftwood, just works for me. I have read different issues with beech.

    With mopani and malaysian driftwood.....

    1. its expensive
    2. its pretty hard and its my experience that wood eating plecos cant eat it due to hardness
    3. its big and dark and snarly in the tank as opposed to so branch style driftwood

    Beech
    1. is softer and I have heard that wood rasping plecos love beech, birch, cherry, and maple
    2. its free and DIY aquarium stuff is very rewarding.

But not at the cost of having fouled water in my tank.

If you have some resources to read about beech driftwood in particular, I would love to read the reference. THanks!

Looks like the beech has been dumped for something darker.
