I have read that assassins can and will grab baby shrimp. Seems unlikely to me but some claim to have witnessed it happen...

Haha...a few of my assassins have tufts like that - not quite as full-a-head-o-hair as yours though!

Quick update: crypts added from my 20 long and doing well... new sponge filters (no more filter noise). Also added 4 assassins once I realized just how cool they look.

They look nice and healthy. Your tank is maturing quickly.

Assassins will take advantage of shrimp that are molting, however it's very rare and as long as they have snails to feed on or even pellets, you'll be fine. They'll eat pretty much anything, like a pond snail would - exception being plants. They're definitely carnivorous.

I may end up getting a betta for this tank... I haven't seen all four adult shrimp at the same time for a while, and the young shrimp don't seem as numerous, and don't seem to be growing much. I wonder if my water is just too hard for them... on the other hand, the java moss has filled in the back of the tank so there could be tons of shrimp hiding in there... The assassins are doing great, I often see all four of them shortly after feeding the shrimp.

I don't want to take the tank down, and I want more "action" than a bunch of tiny shrimp that you can't really see unless you are right next to the tank. I think a betta would fit nicely in there...

The plants are doing great, I have not had any melt at all on the crypts, and the java moss is going nuts! The anubias keeps popping out more leaves, and the java fern has filled in nicely.

I will have to find the charger for my camera batteries so I can get some current pics...

    I wouldn't keep a betta in anything less than a 10G.
