Do you mean the sponge? What do you mean 'changing', There is no need whatsoever to change it.

    Gas mileage isn't everything OIIIIIIIO
Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.
Why pretend there are no stupid questions? Actually, There are many stupid questions: "Should I drink this bleach?" Is just one example.
Having said that, Just because it's a stupid question doesn't mean that it shouldn't be asked. It's better to know.

A warm beer is better than a cold beer. Because nothing is better than a cold beer, and a warm beer is better than nothing.

Do you have the bag of ceramic media that came with the ac in there? If so - Do as below with your sponge.

I have never changed the sponges in my AC filters. I just rinse them out and then dunk them in dechlorinated water and put them back.

Stop everything... What is in the back of your Ac filter? Sponges and what?

    http://www.petsmart.com/product/inde...AvailInCA%2FNo <---- This IS ceramic media . . .

This is what came with the filter right and has been in it all along? And you have never rinsed it in anything other than used tank water right?

i have had it for about 6 months(the filter is about 1 year old)
    i replaced the original one
i rinse all media once a week in tank water along with my water changes
that tanks has had no problems
why are you asking these questions?

I think 850R is asking these question because some people read the manufacture's recommendations to replace fither media every 3 months (or so) and actually do that. This is a problem as if you do this, you will loose almost all the bacteria that you need to keep the water safe for your fish. Changing it will cause you to have to cycle your tank again

I have some filter media that is now 4 years old and I can't see myself chaning it any time soon
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.
