  1. Default Not glass, what is it made of? How much should I offer him?

I called to get information on the tank he has on this posting, he said it was a "commercial" tank but wasn't sure how large, estimated 150 gallons (He will call me tonight with the exact dimensions) and said he has over $500.00 in "accessories" including filter (looks like a sump in the picture?) and lighting.

    On to my question,
He said the tank wasn't glass but he had a bit of an accent so I couldn't make out what he said it was. What does it look like to you? Acrylic? Something else? And what would your opinion be on better/worse/equal to glass?

I'm thinking of offering him $150.00 for the lot (He didn't have an asking price so why not go for a killer deal, right?) Do you think he'll laugh at me?

    Thanks!

If it's not glass than it should be acrylic

Based on the picture, it looks to be around 180 gallons, but I could be way off here. Best to get the measurements like you are already planning on.

Brand new 180 gallon acrylic tank from glasscages.com goes for just over $1400 brand new. I would guess the most a tank like that would go for would be $700 on the top end, but that would depend on what other similar used tank like that sell for in your city and the condition of this tank.

See if you can find other comparable tanks for sale at least near you to make sure you won't offend him with a low-ball offer and have the deal fall through
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

Its not gona hurt to offer anything.and go from there. I doubt he will settle for less tha. 300 tho. The only 2 materials big tanks are made of that i know about is glass and. Acrylic. But if he made it himself the sky is the limit im guessing. But i would think acrylic as thats the choice for large tanks.

Definetly acrylic, you can tell by the rounded corners. Check for scratches in a used tank with it being acrylic.

"I would make him an offer he can't refuse"- and then go from there on the price. I agree that it looks like acrylic as well.

Ehh, I dont know. I am no expert, but that tank doesnt look sturdy enough to hold 180 gallons. Anyone else feel this way? The acrylic still has joints in the corners and no visible reinforcement.

Do what you want, I could be 100% wrong, but I would stay away from this one.

I haven't heard this mentioned yet but.. DO be sure to see that it holds water [Full], It's relevant you know .. :-7

That does look really thin walled to me to be acrylic [Might just be the pic though.]

    Gas mileage isn't everything OIIIIIIIO
Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.
Why pretend there are no stupid questions? Actually, There are many stupid questions: "Should I drink this bleach?" Is just one example.
Having said that, Just because it's a stupid question doesn't mean that it shouldn't be asked. It's better to know.

There is no harm in going there and looking at it. It's impossible to make a determination based on one low quality picture anyway.

+1 Agreed. [Though it's not impossible, It's just that we don't have the full picture in this case]

In fact, Staying away from it is the only way you're guaranteed not to learn anything more about it.

Check it out, You are not obligated to buy it because you looked at it.

Thanks for all the replies! He said it's 5 ft long and "1 foot 20inches" wide and high... I assume he meant 20 inches? Otherwise at 32 inches it would be over 300 gallons! So at 72x20x20 it looks to be 120.
He did say it was acrylic so I'll be checking for scratches and have him fill it to make sure it holds water. Is there any way to buff acrylic if there are scratches?
Anyway, I think I'll go look at it tomorrow.
