  1. Question male betta won't mate

    0 Not allowed!
I have had another pair of betta's breed and I raised and sold thier babies to LFS. Now I have another pair I would like to get babies from.
I have a 10 gal. that's divided . The male was in by himself for about 1 week, then put the female in the opposite side and they both were flaring and very interested.
He built a nice bubblenest and I released her, she went right to the bubblenest and he followed but swam away, she followed him and they returned to the nest but again he would swim away. I left them together for about 3 hrs and he became very agressive and had to remove the female as she was hiding or pretending to be dead :)
Now he will not build a bubblenest, I have removed the female and really am stumped.
I added strong brewed tea to the tank water and thats when he built his first nest. He is an adult and full grown , the female is slightly larger in the body than he is. I even added a 2nd. female after the nest was built as that worked with the other pair.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated

It can be hit or miss sometimes. Sometimes the male just puts his foot... er, fin... down and flat-out refuses.

I tried to breed a pink CT/DT mix male and a purple-pink DT female once, but the male just would not cooperate.

Put on some Barry White or Marvin Gaye, just kidding LOL .

Just happy he did not kill the female.

Just like with any species, some pairs will not mate, no matter how much you wish they would.
2 10 gallon tanks, 1 20 gallon tank, 1 Fluval Edge, 1 29 gallon tank, and one backyard pond.

What is the temperature of the water? And of the air?

Needs to be about 84F ideally and the air column above the tank very moist and 84F as well.

that's good advice, funny- that put a large smile on this lady's face.
I put 2 leaves from outside to float on the water, he seems to like that better than the 1/2 of a styrofoam cup. This is the 2nd. male I have tried with this female. Gheeezzzze.

The temp. is about 80 so will raise it and increase the moisture as I did this with the fry I raised before. Thanks for the help.

hey bump it to 82, then if you dont have a light or hood put some plastic suran(sp?) on top, of course have holes or somthing it usally makes humidity good. I bred bettas for a bit, got a few spawns. I aint that good but I did do that
