Strange brown stuff
I noticed that my Amazon swords (as well as another plant I can't remember) started getting brown blotches on the mature leaves. I figured they were getting old or not enough nutrients. Well adding nutrients for several weeks didn't solve the problem. Then I noticed the brown stuff on my glass. So I cleaned it off and realized I could clean it off the leaves. I'm guessing it is a type of algea but I've not seen one that was just a straight brown color. What could this be?

Sounds like diatoms
Very common in mew tanks, or tanks with new substrate. They thrive from the silicates that leach out of new substrate. Just clean it off and in a few months, it should go away on its ownIf you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

Great, it is indeed a new tank so that makes perfect sense. Thank you.

Water changes and keep cleaning it off like Cliff said. May take a while to get rid of. Nothing to worry about, very common with new setups.
