API Liquid Nitrite Test Weirdness
In each of the last two days of nitrite testing I noticed this odd phenomenon, and since I have never seen nitrites test above .5 until I began cycling this particular tank, I am not sure if this is how it is supposed to work when dealing with higher concentrations:
When I added the drops to the tube the water immediately turned a deep purple, indicating greater than 2.0 ppm (I'm pretty sure I couldn't tell the difference between 2.0 and 5.0 - or 100.0 for that matter). For the next five minutes the color gradually fades, and at the five minute mark it looks to be somewhere between .25 and .50. So my questions are, 1) Is this how the test is supposed to work, and 2) Is the five minute reading accurate?
-50g with two Fluval 50s
-Day 25 of the fishless cycle
-Water temp 82F
-Water treated with Prime to manufacturers recommendations
-Nitrite test bottle expiration date of 06/2017
-Dosed with Ammonia to 2.0 daily, consumed within 24 hours
-Last nitrate test - 3 days ago - somewhere between 40 and 80 (as if I could tell the difference there either)
It would make my day if you guys tell me that this tank is almost cycled.
...and that I'm not screwing something up.
