I've tried cleaning a lot less but nitrates still barely register and my slow growers are clearly struggling.

Going to try dosing just after the weekly water change so I'll have 5ppm nitrate and 0.5ppm Phos*phorus. Bought the powder and made the mixes, hope this will improve matters. Also got a good trace mix of a local brand. If I'm right we'll see improvement within 6 weeks or so.

Well, that did something. Dosed for the first time on saturday afternoon. Went on a business trip on sunday and came home yesterday to find a lot of fresh growth on my rotala, almost 3/4 inch on many stems.

    Baby picture time:

There's also another one in there somewhere that's quite a bit bigger. These two are finally showing an interest in spirulina. I've also noticed the parents barging over and almost trough the fry, perhaps that's on ething that has caused some mortality earlier on.

Stuck my hand in to do maintenance and noticed it was rather chilly. Checked the thermometer, a little over 21 degrees. So I glanced at my heater and noticed there was a lot of condensation and actually quite a bit of water in there. Quickly unplugged the unit saying a silent prayer that the thing hadn't fried half the tank.

Nothing to do but rushing out to my usual shop getting there 20 minutes before closing time. Decided not to mess about and bought an Eheim.

Yeah... I was standing there next to the tank and holding it and I still don't get why it didn't short. Fortunately a ground fault circuit interrupter is required by law in this country so even if it did it would have been a brief shot but that could still have left me with a lot of dead fish

Wow...close call. Glad nothing major happened.

Also, love the pics on the post above, with the chicken dinner. Had no idea you could feed chicken to fish! Do you need to cook it in any way? They make such fuss about the dangers of raw chicken (salmonella, etc) that I would be nervous feeding raw chicken to my fish.
