All this is definitely making me feel better about letting the local deal go for now. I want to eventually add a bunch of plants to my tank, but I know the light improvement must come first

Ive had that fixture and was told its for saltwater actually never used it because of that and someone who had a salt water tank was in the looks for it and bought it the first day i put it on cragslist. I dont know what kind of lighting you want but for 48" fixtures this place has some good ones. I had a basic 48" T5 fixture on a ff5 that i could plant most plants with that light ( if i was good at planting) well heres the website pretty cheap and well made fixtures.. http://www.aquatraders.com/Default.asp They are local to me and i have another one of their fixtures on my new tank now and i love it.

Just looking for more wattage so that when I can get some plants they may survive. Currently at I think 36W in a 55 Gallon..

I had this fixture when i had my 55g http://www.aquatraders.com/48-inch-2...e-p/52123p.htm

You may want this one http://www.aquatraders.com/48-inch-4...re-p/52305.htm

The first one can plat most plants but if your going for a high tech then the second one would be better. I like these fixtures and for the price they cant be beat.

I had a local guy recommend the exact same fixture.

It wouldn't be an issue with a center support bracket right? And I also may go lidless, think that'd be ok?

No problem at all I have mine on my tank and my tank has glass tops that I'm not using and it works perfect the only thing I hate about those fixtures are the brackets it's a balancing game to get them centered you will know what I mean when u get them but u can easily fix that DIY style which I haven't took the time to do yet.

You mean the "legs" that hold the light up? No risk of the light falling into the water right?

No risk of it falling in the tank like I said you will understand when you get it it's not a big deal.
