All this is definitely making me feel better about letting the local deal go for now. I want to eventually add a bunch of plants to my tank, but I know the light improvement must come first

Ive had that fixture and was told its for saltwater actually never used it because of that and someone who had a salt water tank was in the looks for it and bought it the first day i put it on cragslist. I dont know what kind of lighting you want but for 48" fixtures this place has some good ones. I had a basic 48" T5 fixture on a ff5 that i could plant most plants with that light ( if i was good at planting) well heres the website pretty cheap and well made fixtures.. http://www.aquatraders.com/Default.asp They are local to me and i have another one of their fixtures on my new tank now and i love it.

The first one can plat most plants but if your going for a high tech then the second one would be better. I like these fixtures and for the price they cant be beat.110g All Male Peacock/Hap Tank

No problem at all I have mine on my tank and my tank has glass tops that I'm not using and it works perfect the only thing I hate about those fixtures are the brackets it's a balancing game to get them centered you will know what I mean when u get them but u can easily fix that DIY style which I haven't took the time to do yet.

You mean the "legs" that hold the light up? No risk of the light falling into the water right?
