Two types of Luft pumps. One REALLY good quality vibrator pump with rheostat that will last years and years. The other, in several sizes is a linear piston that puts out a lot of air at very reasonable prices.

I'd suggest one of the diaphragm air pumps from jehmco. I currently have the DAPMH-20($90) running approximately 15 sponge filters of various sizes, with some long runs(20'+) of tubing as well. It will probably handle a few more sponges if I needed it to, and it's also super quiet. I also got the AV1-B valves and built a manifold out of 3/4 PVC pipe.
