    Default 20 gallon saltwater tank

    Will 3 damselfish and 2 small clowns be overcrowding for a 20 gallon

    I would say yes it will be to many. Depending on the damsel fish species will determine the aquarium size. Small damsels are minimum 30g+

    The ocellaris clown is minimum 20g.

    If you could bump up the aquarium size to 55g they would have plenty of room
    300g + 240g in wall build! - Follow Here

    Damsels can also be tough to mix with other non aggressive community fish like clown fish. I would suggest sticking to the two clowns or (as a alternative) some smaller fish like firefish. The below might be helpful.
