Default bad wiring or a miss understanding?

im just wondering if my assumption of this being a hack wiring job is correct.

today i plugged my laptop into an outlet. normal outlet in my living room. as soon as i did that i heard a pop and half my living room went completely dark. so i thought *insert swear* i tripped the breaker. hurried to the breaker, nothing was tripped. well maybe it tripped without the switch turning.... so i shut off the breaker and back on. no dice, but the labels are horribly placed so i tried EVERY one. still nothing. now the weirdest thing yet. i went to the bathroom on the opposite side of my apartment and noticed the gfci outlet next to my closet was tripped. after i did my stuff i retested the outlet.

wouldnt you know it, the gfci outlet tripped and shut off nearly half my apartment. seems like the outlet must have been wired in series with all the outlets that died. from what i could tell 9 outlets are on the same thing BUT only 5 of them are close to each other. being in my living room 1 in my room 1 in my moms room and 2 in the kitchen.

i was wondering if there was some insight before i complain to my managers....

I had a similar scenario with my kitchen, bedroom, and 2 baths. This is pretty much half the house. It ended up being boiled down to a wire that was shorting out in an outside outlet, so I would assume that something along those lines could be going on here. However, my breaker was tripped so I could be wrong here.
    Coastie-to-be... hopefully.

if it was both the gfci and the breaker i would have assumed just a power surge but it was just the outlet that shut down half the apartment....

gfci's are always wired strangely. I have one in my upstairs bathroom that is also connected to an outside outlet in my front yard. Melting snow was shorting out our christmas lights which was popping the gfci. So the wiring doesn't seem unusual. I wouldn't worry about it too much unless it happens more than once.

The fact that it happened as soon as you plugged your laptop in sounds like it was an overload. They can get weak and need replacing over time just like a circuit breaker.
