Okay I think I've got it in the right place, but I can't be quite sure because I lost the freshwater reading bar and all I have is the saltwater one. It's says I'm running 1-1.5 on a salt test bar so I think I'm doing pretty well. Now the long wait.

I know someone posted a picture of the API water test chart on the forum but I'll be darned if I can find it. In the meantime ... see if any of the images on this page can help you check your ammonia level. scroll down to almost the bottom and there's a pretty good sized ammonia color chart. And I think you need to make 2 ppm your target :o(

Yes use the link above [There are tons of good scans of all the test cards] and NOT the sw chart.

If the SW and FW were the same chart... There would only be 'The Ammonia chart' instead of two of them you know?

Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.
Why pretend there are no stupid questions? Actually, There are many stupid questions: "Should I drink this bleach?" Is just one example.
Having said that, Just because it's a stupid question doesn't mean that it shouldn't be asked. It's better to know.

Also being your first fishless cycle... something I learned along the way is dont dose daily until you see nitrate movement and ammonia disipation. You will end up with 6ppm ammonia and the tank wont cycle
    FW: 1 45gal, 1 40gal, 3 10gal, 3 30gal all community tanks of different species
    Sw: 1 55gal, 1 30gal show, 1 29gal show, 1 20gal and 2 10's

Yep, You only redose when the ammonia has reached 0 and at first it takes a while as the BB ramps up but by the time the TrItes show up it should be processsing the ammonia daily and you will have to dose as required.

Awesome, this means that my ammonia is about spot on. You are right 850R, there is a difference and I do see that. I remember that it wasn't much. I was planning on taking it to the LFS yesterday because I needed as close to exact numbers as I could. I was just measuring it up against the SW one to make sure the Ammonia dose was actually working =). Which it was!

so... Good news everyone! The tank is getting filthier by the hour =).

I tested again today (two days after dosing) and it seems like the ammonia is still up so no extra dosing for me.

got algae growing, got cloudy water, got filthy on the bottom. I've never been so happy to see a dirty tank in my life.

Now its the slow and steady process... the cloudiness is just bacteria growing. good sign! If you want to speed it up, throw a heater in there, BB grows faster at warm temps.

And you are probably the 1st poster who has ever said that!

Most people who are just starting up tanks complain that they can't see through their water when they get a bacterial "bloom" - they panic and say "what can I add to clear it up?????"

Yeah I've been reading through many posts already and I am no stranger to cycles. I've cycled probably a half dozen salt water aquariums probably taking up the better part of 3 years of my life, haha. I'm not worried about that I'm just worried about keeping that cycle going, I'd like to have SOMETHING in there by Christmas.

I was thinking about putting some plants in their but the algae is attaching to everything it can cling too, so I am hesitant to put some plants through that.

Also I do have a heater in their but not an bubbler. Should I ?
