Just throwing 2 cents in the hat here...

    1) Good on cutting the angels.. you need 55gal or more.
    2) Cut the BN pleco or Cut the Oto's and dont add them in until you have to start scraping algae off the glass. There is not enough food to sustain them and getting the oto's to go to an algae wafer isnt going to help their cleaning long term.
    3) If you get a bn, must have wood.
    4) Fishless cycle this tank. Every single fish you plan on is delicate.
    5) You didnt mention live or fake plants...
    6) I think the tank will be beautiful.. just be careful while stocking. Goal more for a 25% - 35% water change based on your stock. And when adding the new water, having the temp a little warmer than tank temp will aid the fish due to their natural like for warmer temps.

ok enough with this whole # system... I would add lastly that I think the tank will come out gorgeous and has a lot of my favorite fish in there. I would only add that it would be really cool to add around 50 red cherry shrimp. You can find them pretty cheap on aquabid.

I'll address your question about PH with what I know - and it's limited so I hope someone else will chime in.

Fish can much better adapt to a steady PH than a fluctuating PH. And the PH in your tank will level out after it's been cycled for a bit. So I think I'd take my chances and leave the PH alone - unless it's off the charts hard or off the charts soft which could be cause for concern. You just need to be careful when you introduce new fish to the tank that you drip acclimate them for at least an hour and a half in the event your LFS's PH is different from yours.

If, down the road, when you decide to add the GBR's, your ph is too high for them, then you can decide if you want to try to adjust it. I've read that once you start messing with the PH, it can be a tough trick keeping it stable.

Again, I'm hoping someone else will have more complete advice on your PH issues.

You said it perfect Mommie. The PH and GH are better left alone. I have had breeding groups of rams in 7.9ph and in 5.0ph. The supplier of your rams will have them in your local water long enough to aclimate them to it. The softener pillow is effecting the GH which causes that instability you are talking about and bottom line thats terrible for the fish. Also you would have to treat water with the same method before every water change every week... that then entails countless wasted hours, dollars and effort.

Totally agree here, But you have choices.

You can acclimate your fish to your source water once . .OR, Adjust your water to your fish forever.
    Gas mileage isn't everything OIIIIIIIO
Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.
Why pretend there are no stupid questions? Actually, There are many stupid questions: "Should I drink this bleach?" Is just one example.
Having said that, Just because it's a stupid question doesn't mean that it shouldn't be asked. It's better to know.

A warm beer is better than a cold beer. Because nothing is better than a cold beer, and a warm beer is better than nothing.

I see what you mean. Okay, so I will try to get my pH up to the natural level it is for my well water. I took out the softener pillow and I think I should do water changes to bring it back.... Here is my problem though. I am trying with no success at all to start a fishless cycle but I can't get ANY ammonia in my tank. I'm afraid of putting "pure ammonia" because I can't find any at all. Also, other places I have asked this question on this forum have yielded no information on which products labeled "ammonia" are truly pure.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how which product to use to get ammonia in my tank? (I could use actual product name)

Do you have an ACE hardware store close by? They have an ACE brand Janitorial strength formula ammonia and it's what most here suggest.
If you pick up a bottle of ammonia and shake it and it bubbles and stays foamy, it's not the right ammonia. If it bubbles only a little then immediately dissipates, it should work. It can't have any soap or scents added to it.

Hahaha well Ammonia is pretty... fragrant? I think I found some at the local Dollar Store. It did foam a little bit and then dissipated so I think thats the stuff. But I did not get it because I couldn't find the ingredient listing and really wanted to make sure it was only ammonia. I will go pick up some today and toss it in.

Any idea how much to put in a 29 gallon tank? I've read Lady Hobbs fishless cycle thread... But I'm just checking with someone else.

I'm surprised there isn't a list of additives or something that says pure ammonia on the bottle.

I followed Lady Hobbs stick to the letter. cycled in 21 days.
I dosed to 4 on my 90 gallon so I wouldn't dose any higher than 3 ... maybe even 2. If you overdose when you start, you run into trouble so err on the low side.

after you first dose LEAVE THE TANK ALONE for several days before you do any testing. Then test ONLY once a day at the same time. Do NOT redose ammonia until you see Nitrites and then do 1/2 of your original dose.
    It works.

And for sure - dose no higher than 2, okay? 3 would probably be too high for a 29. good luck
