I should also add, if you can find one, try a gentle submersible filter for the tank instead of a hang on the back. Many Betta -really- don't like the flow of HOB's. I currently have a Duetto DJ50, which is the filter I'd make if I were designing a Betta filter. Sadly, the Duetto is getting really hard to find and I think they stopped making them.

There are other options though, like the fluval submersibles. I have not used those but will likely have no choice in the future if I keep desiring more Betta tanks LOL.

Also avoid air "bubblers", some Betta absolutely freak out with them.
2 10 gallon tanks, 1 20 gallon tank, 1 Fluval Edge, 1 29 gallon tank, and one backyard pond.

Thanks again Tiari. I am so glad that you don't have any negative opinions on the giants. One of those would really meet my wishes for a larger fish in the tank. Because themtank is in the kitchen, I think loneliness wouldn't be so much of an issue. We would pretty much alwaysbe there for him to watch.

I have a submersible filter in the tank, as well as a sponge filter. The sponge filter bubbler can be turned down. I also hope, since this fish will be shorter finned, that flow won't be a huge problem. He would also have no tankmates, so that eliminates some of the unpredictable variables...i have heard giant plakats, being descended from the true fighters, are quite vicious when they want to be. As far as i am concerned, the only thing he will be flaring at is his own reflection!
    Thanks again!

My advice: slow down, think, and be willing to learn. Then you'll be fine, no matter what.

I would love a king betta. But when my dragon was being special-ordered the lfs manager noted that the kings were seriously expensive.

The probability of being watched is directly proportional to the stupidity of the act

Yeah, I know they are expensive. Call me a fool, but it doesn't matter to me. They are just georgeous! I am extremely thanksful that my DH has a good job and can support some of my crazy hobby stuff.

I've seen true giants on aquabid for about 25.00USD. Plus all that crazy shipping stuff. I'll just be going to petco to get one of their kings, which are probably half-giants. According to my research, they are breeder culls with a second chance at life.

The tank is cycling now...going well. I can't wait!!!

But I will, healthy fish is first priority...
