Based on the photo you posted and the link 850 posted the 4 holes are for power cables and switches. The image on the website you can see the switch is prewired. I would assume you would have to run the power cord through the smaller hole then wire it to the fixture after it is mounted.

Why it has four holes? possibly to allow you to wire two fixtures independently of one another.

I have a seaclear tank and light hood (40 gallon). It looks like yours is set up to add 2 lights. I bought mine with a single light/ballast already installed (paid extra) but I just installed the second light/ballast in the empty slot. Once you have the light fixture in front of you, all those holes make alot more sense. The holes on the ends are for the electrical cord and there should be some predrilled holes on top for the on/off switch and to hold the fixture in place. On mine, these holes were filled with a smooth disc that was easy to pop out. I hope this helps. Again, it all kind of falls into place once you have everything in front of you and I am not a DIY type of person.

edit, sorry-misread your post and that you had seaclear not lear for life, the hoods look so similar! you shouldn't have any problem
