Dwarf rasboras okay in a planted 55G?
We have a 55G that we're currently keeping fry in, but it's going to be a densely planted home for one school of colorful fish. I like dwarf rasboras, but my husband read that they like low light, and we're going to have some pretty strong lights for the plants. Do I need to consider some other fish?
15 gal: 4 mollies, 1 platy, 1 neon tetra, trumpet snails, pond snails.
20 gal: 20+ various molly and platy fry, pond snails.
55 gal: Planted. No fish yet.

Wow, dwarf rasboras in a 55g is going to take some numbers. Will you post photos when you have it set up? It'll look amazing. I really like little, tiny fish in large tanks. It'll look like a sprawling vista.

We discussed having some shrimp, but the rasboras will be the only fish.

That will be an awesome tank IMO, the little guys will be secure and interact with each other very well. How many are you going to keep? With a tank that size you could keep at least 6 doz.

You really don't have to have crazy- high lighting to have a planted tank. You just have to stick to those that are lower-light plants. You have far less algae problems, no need to CO2, and can still have a fully planted tank. You can have a tank full of Vals, crypts, java fern, moss and Anubis with just a shop light. Especially if you get a 4-light shop light and run plant bulbs in it and hang it over the tank.
I'm not impressed with my T5HO lighting at all. My tank is in the dark all but 6 hours a day to prevent algae. IF I could hang it from the ceiling, I would, but I can't. And I refuse to run CO2 which it probably needs.
You can also have floating plants on top which help shade the tank some but they have to be able to tolerate the T5HO's if you use them.Cycling With Fish?•• The Fishless Cycle••
