Here's a bottom feeder for the new tank! - Rue   Hang in there! - mommy1

Question When after a cycle does PH stabilize?

    0 Not allowed!
My cycle has stabilized to those who followed my recent threads and all I'm doing is feeding the tank until I get fish. I will keep feeding the tank for another week or so until a shipment of fish come to my LFS and today I just tested my PH and I get no reading on either the regular test and the High PH Test, they both read the lowest possible on each one but my tap is in the 8s. I'm kind of confused to if I should buffer my water because I'm getting Africans. The other weird thing is supposedly I would lose my cycle if my PH was as low as my readings are reading but everyday I'm processing 3ppm Ammonia in a 24 hour period Nitrites are not appearing anymore and nitrates are climbing to the high 40s. Can someone explain his for me on what may be causing the confusion in the test ? Thanks

Correct me if I'm wrong but your PH shouldn't change. A cycle is purely giving your new tank time to develop Ammonia and Nitrite eating bacteria. It should not have an effect on your PH what so ever. Some other things could effect your PH like substrate types, driftwoods, etc, etc. I don't recommend changing your PH with buffers, as usually fish can adapt to what you have so long as you don't go extreme with it. What the problem with buffering your PH is, is the constant changing of PH levels to get it where you want it. That in fact does more damage and stresses your fish more than having a little higher or little lower PH level then is ideal for that particular fish. What else is in the tank currently? What type of substrate? Is there any decor, such as driftwood? Are you using liquid test kits?

It's common for ph to fluctuate during cycling, but I'm pretty sure by the time the tank is done cycling it should be stable. You would lose the cycle if the ph was that low which leads me to believe you either have bad tests or are not doing them right.
Why not do a large water change, no cleaning and don't overdose the Prime, just change out a large part of water and add enough Prime for the amount you change, then test the ph again again in several hours and see what results you get.
And answering C-Dubs questions about substrate and decor will be helpful. I remember you have big rocks in the tank, but I don't remember where you got them or if you tested them with vinegar.

When I go fishing I just throw sharp rocks in the water and wait for the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher
Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes that reason is you are stupid and make bad decisions.

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.

In the tank I have 4 boulders (three river rock a natural stone) and pool filter sand from Leslie's pool supplies. I didn't test the rocks with vinegar, that should mess with the PH like that though should it ?

The only think vinegar will tell you is if it will raise the ph. I was just curious.

I never noticed a fluctuation in PH while cycling, that is good to know!

I am at a loss for words...
Can you flip that card upright and take another picture of just the card, I'm unfamiliar with it and would like to try to help but I can't see what the numbers are the way it is in the current pic.
