the tank looks really nice. I've never had shrimp but have always wanted to try them. I think I'd give it a go in this tank since you have the room.
The only concern is for the assassin snail. if there are no snails in there you need to feed it. It's my understanding they do not eat algae that grows in the tank, but they will eat algae wafers. They will also, if really hungry, eat baby shrimp .... so keep that all in mind.
Maybe you could trade the assassin for a mystery snail?30 gal FW:dw gourami, cory cats, ABN pleco, Colombian & Serpae tetra, nerites & mystery snails
5.5 gal FW: crown tail betta

Assassins will also prey upon adult shrimp if one happens to wander over them. Be warned.

Yes it lost its cycle for a bit, but i just finished retesting this tank this afternoon and i had these fish for about days. I got these minnows as the readings were back to proper cycling they day i got them. And i did a massive water change prior to picking them up just in case.

True fishmommie or i could move it to a tank that actually needs a snail.
Great idea.
Edit: snail was moved on the fake rock decoration (because i didn't want to remove it from the decoration as it was there at the time) to the 4 gallon tank. Also it gives my betta rose somewhere to chill again.Last edited by Shidohari; 01-07-2013 at 09:30 PM.

Good to hear it. I'd drop the temperature as I'm sure minnows are a temperate species. No?

i'll see what i can do, this is the heater that came with the set. I'll see if i can get this controlled to 78 degrees F.
Should i go with the mystery snail in the tank instead of shrimp? I think mystery snails eat algae like shrimp do.
I know the fish that i have in the ten gallon tank in the bedroom, which i can't reveal yet because it's not complete in there...i am waiting on something to come in on wednesday, are red. the cherry shrimp i was planning to put in there i think would clash...thinks red do clash.
Should i get a snail for there too? also would one mystery snail be enough for a ten gallon tank to do the job...6 gal column- 1 powder blue dwarf gourami, 1 bronze cory, and one nerite snail, planted.

I've looked them up and 64–79°F is the ideal range for these minnows, so get it down to 72°F if you can. If you go for shrimp they will also thrive at the lower temperature. I keep mine at 71.6°F.
I don't know about the snails. Depends on the availability of food for them I suppose.

in the minnow tank i think i do want shrimp because the red of the cherry shrimp would be a nice contrast to the 8 gold white minnows i have
