    Default Cliff's canopy build

I had a few requests to show more pics and a quick explanation of how I built the canopy on my 120 gallon reef so I thought I would put it a thread here. I actually tried to copy the canopy that Crispy has on his tank and just make a few changes to that design. I wish I had taken photos while I was building it, but this will give you a pretty good idea

I started by making a rectangular frame out of 2X2s and a single ¾” X 3” pc of wood. I made this the same dimensions as the tank. This is the part of the canopy that rests on the top of the tank. The ¾” X 3” pc was used to be placed on the front of the tank to minimize any additional height that could make it hard to reach into the tank for maintenance and feedings.

I then cut and attached the sides, the back, and ½ of the top to the frame pc. I spaced the frame pc on the sides and back so they would hang down 2” past the bottom of the frame pc. This will help to prevent the canopy from being accidently pushed off the tank as well as hiding the black trim around the top of the tank. I also drilled two air holes on each side as well as two air holes on the top. I also drilled two holes in the back near the corner to run cables through for the poweheads, lighting and what not.

Once that was done, I cut a pc of wood that would cover the rest of the top and a pc of wood that would cover the front of the canopy. I attached these two pcs together using three small bracing pcs and then attached the lid to the copy using a long piano hinge

I then added the trim pcs to the sides to help block out all light the gets through the small cracks as well as hiding the screws that I used to attach the wood together. Every pc of wood was glued and screwed together.
I stained it followed by 5 coats of urethane

Once of the last things that I had done was to add two pcs of wood on the inside of the canopy at each side for the mounting rail of my LED lighting to sit on.

I still need to finish spray painting the covers of the vent holes. I tried using some old paint that I had but it did not stick to the plastic very well at all. I sanded them a little and when it is warn enough outside, I will paint them with Krylon Fusion paint and install them in the pre-drilled hole I made in the canopy.

If I had T5 or MH lighting then I certainly would have added some ventilation fans inside of vent covers to minimize the heat buildup inside the canopy. As these LEDs produce next to no heat, the vent holes are more than enough.
