Default Fish For 40 Gallon Community Compatible With Honey Gourami And Bolivian Ram?

    0 Not allowed!
I'm an experienced aquarist planning to get a new 40 gallon breeder for a community tank with live plants, a smooth sand substrate, and fairly low current. The tap water here is 8 dGH and around 7.4 pH, and while I'd prefer fish that can adjust to that, if I really like the fish I can change the pH/hardness. I haven't bought anything for this new tank yet, so I am open to changes or suggestions for how to set up the tank to make it ideal for the fish I end up getting.

I already have a male Honey Gourami (Trichogaster chuna) and a male Bolivian Ram (Mikrogeophagus altispinosus) I'll be moving to this tank once it is planted and cycled, so those definitely need to be compatible with the other fish I add. I want to stay away from fin nippers and super active fish because of the Honey Gourami as well as territorial fish that would tangle with the Bolivian Ram, but that should still leave me with some nice options, I hope. Any fish that would be good?

Maybe a school of rasbora or docile tetra? They school or shoal nicely and are not aggressive or territorial. What about bottom schoolers? A school of corydoras?

I also like pencilfish, espes to be specific, but have never kept them yet. There's also many not so common fish to choose from, like whiptail catfish, panda garra, panda loach, lots and lots can deal with your water hardness.

I suggested schools because the gourami and ram seem like your showstoppers or focus fish. What is the temperature?

A nice school, 12-15, of Rummy nose is always nice ;-)

As far as a peaceful rasbora as suggested by angelcraze, you can't beat harlequin rasbora's

As far as the mentioned pencifish, the golden pencifish is a great place to start with.

I haven't set up the tank yet, so I don't have a final temperature. I figured I would try to look at the fish and see where their ideal temperatures overlapped and choose that way.

I'm very interested in the Harlequins, Corycats, and Panda Garras. Would all of those get along together plus with the Honey Gourami and Bolivian Ram? Also, would the Garras do best singly or in groups? It sounds like the Garras come from water that can flow a lot or be fairly still. Would an air stone in a corner be okay for them to play in but still be still okay for the Honey Gourami to avoid, given the size of the tank?

Oh drat, you are correct, they originate from fast flowing waters I've personally never kept panda garras, but they are one of @WhistlingBadger 's favorite fishes. He keeps them in an asian themed tank and in a 150g, I don't think it has a lot of water movement..... but he'd know best. Hopefully he can relay his experience keeping them and what type of current they require.

Having turbulence on the water surface plus an airstone would add some oxygen for sure IMO, but i'm not sure if they need actual current (like from a powerhead) or not. Plants also will add lots of oxygen during the day when the tank is lit. An airstone is perfectly fine for the other fish btw.

Might be a lot for the bottom, but I don't believe either are very territorial. I feel a bit ignorant for suggesting the panda garras, I just got excited cuz I really like them! Haha

Let's wait for @WhistlingBadger or @Boundava. I think she plans to keep them as well.

The cool thing about panda garras is that they live in seasonal streams (in Myanmar) that are rushing torrents during the monsoon, and semi-stagnant pools the rest of the year. So they really do enjoy current and will almost always seek it out when available (I'll include a video made when I first got mine; one of them was also kind enough to demonstrate why they need a tight-fitting lid!), but they can do OK with moderate water movement. They are also pretty flexible regarding hardness and pH, as long as you acclimate them correctly. I'd probably keep three or four in a 40g.

As for the rest of your stock they should work well with the exception of the ram. I have no experience keeping one so I can't say if it would be OK with Cory's and Garra.
