    Default Oodinium without Host

    Hello fellow Aquatic Community members!

I am interested in making a planted tank and populating it with small fishes like Cardinal Tetra that I have already quarantined.
But before I do that, I would like to make sure the planted tank is free of parasites (the display tank).

I was wondering if the Oodinium/ Velvet parasite would be starved to death by setting the planted aquarium temperature to 28C or 82F and leaving it without fishes for 2 weeks?

During this time, i will continue with medium lighting, 25-30ppm of CO2 and EI fertilization.

can anyone share with me their experiences?

    Cheers
    -Harris

    Welcome to the AC.

Does the display tank already contain fish?...if not, why would you be concerned over the presence of any parasite to begin with?

The display has no fish at the moment, its got some plants only.
Im concerned with the presence of oodinium because its possible they hitched hiked in my plants when I bought them.
preferably, I would put my Cardinals in the tank when I am confident that oodinium has starved out from having no host.

Did the plants come from a tank with the disease present?

I know very little about fish diseases, I'd research how long the parasite can live without a host if I were you.

Is the display tank cycled?....seems to me that in the time it takes to cycle, and with the higher heat, no parasites would be able to survive, and I'm not even certain that velvet can/would hitch hike on plants in the first place

@Rocksor could get you much better advice, hopefully he'll see this and chime in

But to be honest : Why only worry about these parasites? Aren't there lot of other possible issues to worry about (bacteria, worms, etc etc....)

Yes, but will they live long enough on plants to be of concern?

It would help to know if the plants came from a tank with fish, as well

If concerned that may have brought Velvet into tank, just keep free of livestock for 14 days. The life cycle is completed in ten to fourteen days at a temperature of 75-78 degrees.
If no host the parasite will die.
