    I have a 50gal cherry shrimp tank. I have

2 internal filters (will be changing to sponge filters when i get me hands on some).
    Normal tank lighting (nothing special)
Plants: Java fern, Java Moss, Val, Anubias & Peacock Moss
    Substrate: White play sand

They have gone from around 150 or so to LOTS!
    Lots of tanks

    +1 to Alasse post.

The only thing I would add is some seasoned driftwood.

Also depending on the colour of the shrimp, that would dictate the colour of the sand.

Eg, cherry red shrimp = black substrate. It just makes them "pop" and easier to find.
Warning; Bulldog Pleco guarding my Sons tank now..

Please remember; every keystroke has a consequence.

I had mine on black, i find they stand out better on the white personally.

You will work out your preference :)
