My very Nervous piranhna,s
Hi there, iv recently bought 4 young RBP which are in a 4ft tank with planting and places to hide plus space to swim about , but i cant get over how nervous they are i only have to walk into the room and they all dart for cover swimming around fratically ? Im new to keeping piranha,s but have kept other fish for years. I have a 6ft tank with birchirs, fire eel, ghost knife fish and a mix of community fish but this is my first time with RBP. So if someone could give me some tips or info on them i would really appreciate it
Ps, im new to the site so hi

only thing i really know about them suckers is they're cool and all but they produce a lot of waste!
What do you feed them? I personally would suggest getting beef heart and freezing it.
How new is the RBP and are you sure its a RBP not a red belly pacu? difference is with piranha is they're bottom jaw protrudes further than the top jaw and they have sharp teeth, pacu's bottom jaw are even with the top and have human like teeth (they kind of remind me of a horse)
I would say they're skittish because its new to its surroundings, once they get more familiar with it the should calm down. Do they eat regularly and from what you've seen do they have a healthy or voracious appetite?

I used to have 6 red bellied piranha and it's just as Aeonflame says. They will always be skittish especially if you turn the room light on after it's been dark awhile. The larger they get the bigger the bang when you startle them.
Beef heart is a great every day food with the odd treat thrown in once in a while. Earth worms were cheap and they seemed to love them.
Freeze dried tubiflex was also devoured with relish when they were young.
Have fun and move slowly for a while.

Hi guys thanks for the replys, first of all they are RBP they are about 3ins in size, i feed them white bait, beef heart, chicken, prawns, earth worms and bloodworms so they get a well varied diet but recently they dont seem to be eating that much.I did,nt feed them for a couple of days then i tried again tonight with some white bait which when i first had them they would rip them apart before it hit the bottom but now they just keep hiding every time i go near the tank? There is 2 florecent lights on my tank so i have turned 1 off so to dull the tank a bit.Tonight i have cleaned the tank and rearanged the plants so theres like a wall of them in the middle of the tank to give them some where to hide plus changed about 25% of the water.
The lights are on timers so when the day lights go off there is a night light moon light affect, i never turn the lights on in my lounge when the tank lights are off.
So i will just have to hope they settle down as they get bigger
Thank again much appreciated
