  1. Default Interesting guppy info

    Taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guppy

"The guppy prefers a hard water aquarium and can withstand levels of salinity up to 150% that of normal sea water,[9] which has led to them being occasionally included in marine tropical community tanks, as well as in freshwater tropical tanks. Guppies are generally peaceful, though nipping behaviour is sometimes exhibited between male guppies or towards other top swimmers like platys and swordtails and occasionally other fish with prominent fins such as angelfish. Its most famous characteristic is its propensity for breeding, and it can breed in both fresh water and marine aquariums."

This is so interesting! Who would have thought a guppy could withstand a marine environment!! They are tough guys!!!!

Since they're native to Trinidad and Tobago and all the freshwater there is pretty close to the estuaries so it's not as outrageous as it may seem at first.

We just never picture them in a wild environment so info like that has a lot of impact lol.

On occasion you will see a guppy in a sw tank in a retail setting but it is destined to be a snack for another occupant.

Just because information is on wikipedia does not make it inherently inaccurate.
    Show tanks - 125, 125, 90, 10, 5
    Quarantine tanks - 29, 29, 20H, 20L

wikipedia used to be a lot worse. They have really cracked down on inaccurate information in the past year or so. I would always try to find another source to back it up, but then again I would do this with any site.

That is pretty interesting. I never knew they could live in actual salt water tanks. I knew they could live in brackish water.

Many of the small livebearers can be acclimated very gradually to pure saltwater. (Mollies especially are known and experimented with for this.) Since many species live near estuaries, as mentioned above, brackish and occasionally even saltwater is not unheard of.

Granted though, as these fish move further from freshwater their numbers generally show as less due to temperature differences and basic food chains of big fish eats little fish.

Additionally, it is of some people's belief that any salt at all will lessen the lifespan. Maybe not with fast results, but will certainly cut it down a little.

That's fine, Before you dismiss it though you just may want to check out more than a single source of information as stated previously.

I doubt any of the wikiidiots who thrill to changing info on there are going to bother to hack every other available online source - just saying.

Or we could actually just focus on the right topic, and give real reasons why it's believed or not.
