    Welcome back! - Slaphppy7

Default 46 gal tank - which fish?

I'm nervous about trying cichlids because of all the stories I've read about needing to overstock to handle aggression and then deal with one fish that tries to take over everything - am I giving them a raw deal? LOL

For a 46 gal tank, maybe I should just stick with 2 large schools of colorful tetras?
In Israel, even if I wanted to set my tank up, it was slim pickings in the LFS there.
Also, I kept all my substrate from 3 years ago, filter media, plastic plants, etc. - I should give everything a good washing first and then add to the tank with conditioned water added last?
I still have my water conditioner but need to get a test kit.
I'm going to re-read all the cycling without fish stickies.
    Thanks for any advice!

Overstocking cichlids only applies to African cichlids. They evolved being in tight quarters with lots of other cichlids. It's not stressful to them. If you try to do this with Central American or South American cichlids, you have a higher tendency to end up with sick fish or short lived fish. These fish cannot handle the stress of being too close to other cichlids when not given enough space.

A simple rinse of the decor is enough to remove and dust from being stored.

Make sure there is no expiration date on your water conditioner.

As far as fish goes, do you know if your water is hard or soft? Do you know the PH? PH doesn't change as a result of water hardness.
