  1. Default Fish tank in a media room???

    0 Not allowed!
My wife does not like how I am planning on decorating our new 55 gallon, so she would like her own tank. The only other area in our home suitable for a large tank is in our finished basement HOWEVER the is set up with a 96" wall mounted movie screen, ceiling mounted projector and 7 speaker surround sound. No windows in the room.

We only use it to watch one or two movies per week, no TV.

My question is: Would the movie and speaker sound bother the fish? I am thinking I need to locate this in another room

    Thanks for all the help

I can't speak authoritatively on it as I have no experience with this, but I know I certainly would not put a tank in my media room. The fish jump when I turn on the vacuum cleaner, I can only imagine how badly the bass rumbling thru the tank from the floor unit plus all the other bangs and flashes of light and sound and vibration would startle the fish. If you're like me, you only use the room on evenings and weekends, so the fish would never really have a chance to acclimitise to the room. PLus, the light and noise of the tank would detract from your viewing experience. Lose-lose situation, IMO...

The fish won't care if you watch movies in the same room as them. I have a living room with 7.1 surround sound. There are 2 small tanks, 75 gallon, and one medium tank, 180. The fish don't care at all.

i think you are going to get mixed answers here. but the facts are: fish are sensitive to vibrations, specially cat fish. some fish are very sKidish. a media room will make the tank vibrate badly if placed in the wrong area. some fish can die from being stressed too much, some fish can adapt to the vibrating.

all in all, i think its totally up to you. if you go that way. set up the tank as far from flashing lights (or cover it during films) and as far away from the speakers. you might be able to get away with it being in the back of the room... location and stock would be key.

hmmm... my only issue would be that it is a room you don't spend enough time in. My tanks are in the basement (family room) with one small window a big screen tv, surround sound, a bar, exercise equipment and I have no issues. In fact when I sit on the couch to watch tv most of my fish congregate to the area nearest the couch... you might want to place some styrofoam under the tank to help with any vibrations.

I guess I shouldn't watch Pearl Harbor, the attack sequence would kill the fish

Strong vibrations can stress out fish which will not be good for them

If you set-up a tank in the room, you would have to be careful about the volumn and base
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

Glass acts as an insulator. The fish won't care. Turn the bass up. I do. I can't turn my TV on without the stereo being on too. 7.1 surround sound whenever the TV is on. A 15 inch powered subwoofer too. I watch TV all the time. In fact, its on right now. The fish don't notice it. There are several threads on this around on different forums. The noise and vibrations from a TV, stereo, etc. do not bother the fish.

Not to "add any fuel to the fire"; but I've got to agree with Cliff and Genocidex.

I don't feel like there is any fire here Steller1. Just a polite conversation.

Then according to Cliff, Genocidex, and Steeler1, any fish in a room with a stereo, will become stressed, and die prematurely? Where are you guys getting your information on this? From first hand experience? Or are you just guessing?
