Thread: Assassin Snails

    Default Assassin Snails

For some reason all 5 of my Assassin Snails are out and about in my tank today. They usually are hidden and burrowed in the the substrate and when they are out, I only see maybe one or two at a time. I have never seen all 5 out at once.

Just wondering what if anything does this mean? They ate up all of my pond snails a loooong time ago. Could this mean that they are all hungry?

Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.
Why pretend there are no stupid questions? Actually, There are many stupid questions: "Should I drink this bleach?" Is just one example.
Having said that, Just because it's a stupid question doesn't mean that it shouldn't be asked. It's better to know.

I've read about this once before, quite tragic indeed what happened next.

    Here's what I remember:

So a fishkeeper saw a large group of his assassin snails out and about in his tank one day and just like you, found it to be very peculiar. He thought nothing of it after doing his normal feeding routine and went about his day.

In a week or so, the fishkeeper woke up one morning to see that literally none of his fish were there. He thought that maybe he was just groggy, but no, all the fish were gone. He reaches into the tank to look around the plants and as soon as his hand hits the substrate, his assassins yank him an he drowns shortly thereafter.

A neighbor reported a fire in the house later that morning but the firefighters just couldnt put it out in time. They attributed the intensity and speed of the blaze to a propellent which accelerated the spread of the fire within the house. Everything was burnt to the ground. Interestingly enough, no remains, human, fish or snail were ever recovered. Crime rates in the neighbor rose dramatically until mosquito dusting took place that summer with an experimental copper compound.

I'm pretty sure that's the account... but I might be paraphrasing.

Omfg thats too funny. Since no pest snails they may be adapting to becoming foragers like most snails are searching for whatever they can find to eat.

A little late in replying but all of your posts were very funny!!!!!!

Now... one more question... When they were all out strolling the neighborhood, speed dating, and trying to snatch me in the tank, I noticed that their shells were not very healthy looking. Could that be because their diet no longer consists of pest snails?

How hard is your water? A lack of GH specifically will lead to brittle shells and general poor health.
